Can History be repeated?

Digging into the archives for this edition of Della's Diary.

The Doubleview Boys need a bit of inspiration given we are currently sitting 8th on the ladder - here's hoping history can be repeated.

-----------------

Doubleview - 2009 Premier League Champions
coming from a seemingly hopeless position
the story of how Doubleview rose to be Premier League Champions in 2009
winning the last 10 games of the season in a row
dubbed by the players as "the greatest win ever"

Top : Robbie Ball, Garry Nelson, Charlie Slavich, Matty Mitchell, Kyle McIlroy, Ken Screech, Roger Barnes, Pat Buller, Dennis Katunarich

Bottom : Aaron Delaporte, Cameron Tunstall, Lindsay Thorn, Daniel Trewhella, John Slavich, Peter Ker, Jim Bausor

Other plays thro the season were : James Jaworski, Ross Dempsey, Bruce Urqhart, Jim Barry, Danny Slavich and Bob Fryer

"the lead-up to history"

After 10 rounds in the 18 game competition Doubleview sat in 8th position

After finishing runner-up in 2008 the club had lost skipper Jon Sharp but picked up some quality replacements, entering the side where Daniel Trewhella, James Jaworski and Peter Ker.

Robbie Ball and Dennis Katunarich were unavailable early in the season but both would come back to play vital roles later on.

The season had started well with wins in the opening two rounds over Cambridge and Yokine, the side was actually on top of the ladder.

Round 3 home to Wanneroo saw the beginning of the turmoil - off the back of an overall loss of 2 and a rink loss of 17 James Jaworski announced an immediate departure from Doubleview to play for rival club Victoria Park.

Round 4 was a wash-out with and the ensuring weeks saw the following results -

Round 5 loss to Kalamunda 64/84
Round 6 loss to Cockburn 72/80
Round 7 win over Dalkeith/Nedlands 87/81
Round 8 loss to South Perth 65/84
Round 9 loss to Osborne Park 72/79
Round 10 loss to Cambridge 62/90

The multiple premiership side was now in 8th and to make matters worse had also lost the services of two quality players with Ross Dempsey and Bruce Urqhart unavailable for the majority of the remaining season with work commitments.

Could the side regroup to make the finals - it seemed unlikely.

The following comment was written on a prominent website

"The bottom line however is Doubleview have been blasted out of the finals and I cant see any hope for them from here."

"10 games to glory"

When the Doubleview side stepped out onto B green to play 9th side Yokine little did they know it was to begin the start of a magnificent 10 game run of unbeaten bowls.

With a completely revamped side the game started in rather terrible fashion.

The sides most decorated players in Robbie Ball and Dennis Katunarich were getting hammered Ball was losing 15-1 whilst Katunarich was 16-0 down nearing the half-way point of the game the other two rinks were leading but not by anywhere near enough.

However there is a reason why these players are often referred to as legends of the game, both responded to the challenge and the threat that the Mighty View could be in relegation territory.

Ball drew the extra shot within centre metres of the jack to win his game whilst Katunarich substantially closed the margin to go down by just 4.

The final result - Rd 11 v Yokine
Ball, Mitchell, Thorn, Delaporte def J Carter 16-15
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Durrant 21-17
Katunarich, Urqhart, Screech, Nelson lost to Heaton 18-22
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall def Dodd 24-18

"internal faith growing"

Following the Yokine victory the side had restored some internal faith but the win was hardly a resounding answer to the critics.

Facing final 4 contenders Wanneroo at there home ground another solid performance was needed.

The side skippered by Daniel Trewhella was to prove the catalyst for another victory thumping Stein Davies by 20.

The other rinks battled manfully with the team winning overall by 10 shots - confidence was lifting.

The final result - Rd 12 v Wanneroo
Ball, Mitchell, Thorn, Delaporte lost to Adams 16-25
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Davies 27-7
Katunarich, Urqhart, Screech, Nelson lost to Humprheyson 18-24
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall def Alden 21-19

The side was now in 6th position but 10 points adrift of a top 4 spot - could it still be possible?

"the roll continues"

Round 13 has been moved due to a clash with the Australia Open and the next game was to be against one of the bottom sides in Kalamunda, however Doubleview had a poor history of being beaten by them and in fact had been easily defeated earlier when Neil Payne took apart Daniel Trewhella's rink by 23 shots.

Dennis Katunarich was unavailable for this match and a surprise decision was announced to move Aaron Delaporte from lead into the replacement skippers role. Ken Screech moved to lead in Ball's rink whilst Roger Barnes coming back from knee surgery slotted into Delaporte's side in the 2nd position.

The revamped rink drew the task of playing the past conqueror Neil Payne and although losing by 6 the side battled manfully to allow the reaming three rinks to take control for another solid win.

The final result - Rd 14 v Kalamunda
Ball, Mitchell, Thorn, Screech def Biglin 19-12
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Griffen 22-16
Delaporte, Urqhart, Barnes, Nelson lost to Payne 12-18
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall drew Brandsma 22-22

"triple header magic"

Friday March 6th and the following Saturday proved to be a pivotal point in the season as the View took on the task of playing 3 games within the space of 24 hours.

Katunarich was back in the side with Delaporte now 3rd - the remaining rinks stayed as they were and this would be the team who only a month later would claim the flag.

No club had ever played a triple header before but with re-scheduled fixtures arranged the side went into battle against South Perth, Victoria Park and Cockburn with all games at home and came away winning all 3 and 20 points from a possible 24.

In the first game on the Friday night against South Perth it was sweet revenge from the corresponding away fixture as Doubleview got off to a flyer.

Katunarich was in superb form all weekend but with Delaporte playing well his rink was particularly dominant in crushing Matt Ellul's side by a massive margin.

The final result - Rd 17 v South Perth
Ball, Thorn, Mitchell, Screech def Bresland 24-14
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker lost to N Reagan 14-19
Katunarich, Delaporte, Barnes, Nelson def Ellul 35-14
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall lost to Walker 18-19

"closing in on the finals"

In typical Doubleview fashion the team rallied for morning breakfast which with the majority of the team trying to recover from a few celebratory drinks the night before.

Ken Screech was to miss the morning game as he played in the rescheduled fixture in the One Blue side and was thus not eligible. Taking up the leaders mantle and doing a mighty fine job was to be Bob Fryer.

Playing Victoria Park the View seemed to have the ascendancy right through-out the contest however in the closing stages several Vict Park conversions saw them hit the lead and take a 4 shot advantage with just a few ends remaining.

With what can only be described as the bowl of the season Robbie Ball took centre stage. His team trailing by 4 and the last bowl of the match he converted a single shot into a score of 6 to not only give Doubleview the lead but also an extra rink point which ultimately saw the side finish in 2nd spot later in the season.

The remaining rinks did enough to claim overall victory by 5.

The final result - Rd 13 v Victoria Park
Ball, Thorn, Mitchell, Fryer def Provost 23-21
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Butler 20-17
Katunarich, Delaporte, Barnes, Nelson def Wishart 24-18
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall lost to Mitchell 19-25

"confidence soaring"

After rallying to win the morning contest confidence was at a high point and the View were now on the charge. They took on bitter rivals Cockburn but the match was never really in doubt although the final margin was just 9 shots.

Daniel Trewhella's rink took care of most of the business defeating Steve Srhoy by 8 whilst Kat was still at his best winning by 5 over Mike Zusman.

At the end of the day the resurgent Doubleview side had now moved into 2nd spot provisionally having played an extra game but the players knew two more wins for the season and they were in the finals.

The final result - Rd 15 v Cockburn
Ball, Thorn, Mitchell, Screech def Carberry 15-16
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Srhoy 21-13
Katunarich, Delaporte, Barnes, Nelson def Zusman 18-13
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall lost to Brown 20-23

"professionalism prevails"

Doubleview headed out to Dalkeith/Nedlands knowing they still needed a win and as many points as possible - it should have been a formality playing a side that was already headed for demotion but every game can still be lost.

The side showed true professionalism to put Dalkeith away with minimum fuss.

Trewhella's rink continued there strong form with Alan Eddy medal winner Kyle McIlroy in sparkling touch. John Slavich's rink also were comfortable victors in a trend that was to continue right through to the grand final.

The final result - Rd 16 v Dalkeith/Nedlands
Ball, Thorn, Mitchell, Screech def Skorich 21-19
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Bacich 25-10
Katunarich, Delaporte, Barnes, Nelson lost to Richardson 19-25
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall def Krajancic 27-16

"ladder leaders demolished"

The last round of the competition and it was to be played away to ladder leaders Osborne Park who had not been beaten at home all season. Due to re-scheduling Doubleview was uncertain as to how many points were needed to make finals as the majority of the competition were also playing the next day.

The one thing they knew was a win put them in the finals for sure.

Doubleview bounced out in full force easily adjusting to the slick Osborne Park surface.

Ball lead 11/0 and Slavich was up 12/0 with an overall lead of 22. The margin did get reduced
at times but the View always steadied and did enough to win well.

Jim Barry did an outstanding job filling in for Cameron Tunstall who was unavailable.

The final result - Rd 18 v Osborne Park
Ball, Thorn, Mitchell, Screech def Pickering 24-15
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Bacich 25-10
Katunarich, Delaporte, Barnes, Nelson lost to Goddard 13-24
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, Barry def Rankin 24-12

As a postscript to this game Victoria Park was defeated the following day by Cockburn which allowed Doubleview to finish the season in 2nd spot.

The View had done what many thought not possible - they had won there final 8 games to finish in the finals - in the process they defeated all the finals contenders.

Could they go one step further and claim the flag - yes, they could.

"semi-final dominance"

Having only 7 days earlier defeated Osborne Park on the same green the players headed into the first semi-final brimming with confidence.

When the cards where called Slavich faced a re-match with Rankin whilst Katunarich faced Goddard on the same rink where he was beaten by 11. Ball took on Gary Caffell whilst Trewhella was to play Pickering.

The Osborne Park side crumbled under the force of a rampaging Doubleview outfit.

The rink spearheaded by Screech, Mitchell and Thorn was plastering there bowls all over the jack whilst skipper Robbie Ball was converting like a machine as that side raced to a 18-1 lead.

The Katunarich rink was getting the better of the Goddard re-match whilst Slavich was continuing his dominance of Rankin.

Trewhella's rink where facing some good bowling by Pickering but kept matters tight.

In the end the View were sensational winners - and just a step away from the winning the big one.

The final result - Semi-final v Osborne Park
Ball, Thorn, Mitchell, Screech def G Caffell 29-7
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker lost to Pickering 11-18
Katunarich, Delaporte, Barnes, Nelson def Goddard 22-15
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall def Rankin 17-13

"sweet Grand Final success"

The scene was set - Doubleview going for an unprecedented 10th win in a row after all hope seemed lost languishing in 8th spot. They faced Victoria Park who had two resounding wins the previous day including an equally impressive win against Osborne Park to make the Grand Final.

Kyle McIlroy provided an inspirational poem on the bus which had the team ready to run through a brick wall.

With a strong crowd in attendance the match was off in earnest with both sides giving it there all.
Most judges thought it would be a close one and for most of the day it was but one team had the greater will to win the hard fought contest.

Robbie Ball's rink start terribly - just no other way to put it really, as they faced the Vict Park onslaught down 17-1 early stages but full credit to the team for fighting it out strongly and managing to remain competitive for the rest of the game.

The Katunarich and Trewhella rinks where having good battles against there respective opponents however in the end both View sides came out triumphant.

The real story of the day however was the performance of John Slavich (pictured).

With the determination of a battle hardened warrior he took his team to a victory over the Jeff Mitchell skipper rink of Victoria Park. On numerous occasions John was faced with the prospect of being down on the head in a big way but rose to the challenge and snuffed out the threat.

Left playing with a good aggregate lead his team seemed to falter but like a true captain he was always there to steady the ship and bring the View home to sweet, sweet victory.

The final result - Grand Final v Victoria Park
Ball, Thorn, Mitchell, Screech lost to Wishart 13-27
Trewhella, McIlroy, C Slavich, Ker def Butler 19-15
Katunarich, Delaporte, Barnes, Nelson def Provost 19-13
J Slavich, Buller, J Bausor, C Tunstall def Mitchell 22-12

Well done to the Mighty Doubleview! 2009 Premier League Champions

"the Grand Final poem"

Written and read by Kyle McIlroy to the team before they left
the bus to play in the Grand Final.

In past I shared a poem of note
To describe our culture our blood was wrote

As brothers the flag we honour and pursue
None others exist as the mighty view

The view does pulse through our warrior veins
Cos our history shows we’ve endured the pain

To test our hearts you can surely see
We've prevailed a year of tragedy

Yet a warrior does never look behind
Cos a true journey is one yet to find

The truth of what we set to win
Ensure our lights of war don’t dim

We’re at hells gates with swords drawn as kin
Like past fortunes have told our backs to the wall

It’s the view who’ve turned up to say fuck you all
We have rose from the grave, a warriors stance

Show our enemies have got no fucking chance
I stand with you with pride for each other

Into battle we go each as brothers
So fight today with heart in hand to stand as one, a dream a plan

These fuckers aint takin this flag from us
So lets get off this fucking bus

We’ll put there name to the test
Show every mother fucker the view is best

Club song
Who are we?

We are the View, we are the View
We are the mighty Doubleview - yeah!

Come look us over and see what you find
A mighty fine bowling club with one thought in mind

Never mind the weather, never mind the heat
Coz we'll be there at the end of the year and we'll be hard to beat

Our name is Doubleview our colours are gold and blue
the flag is what we're after and only the flag will do

Coz we'll be there at the end of the year and we'll be hard to beat
We are the mighty Doubleview
Yeah !! - smoken !!!
