Monday Review 27th August

THE MONDAY REVIEW with Aaron Delaporte

Perfect weather conditions for racing at Belmont on Saturday and some terrific performances handed in by a couple of talented 4yo's who could develop into topliners in coming years.

The rail was in the 3m position on a Good3 track which played fairly all day.

RACE 1 WESTSPEED 3YO HANDICAP - 1600m - 2 Metro Wins 3YO

Comment:
PATTIE ME LASS was a very easy winner in this event where they ran good time. Blinkers On certainly improved her racing manners and she went to the line very strongly for Kyra Yuill who had a big day in the saddle.

FLAG OFFICER did a good job battling it out into second after being unable to assume its normal front running role.

SOUTHERN DRAWL was once again competitive and has a win in him in weaker company.

The favorite AVE THE SNIP may have over-raced a touch in the lead but never got the journey.

LETHAL JONES and ASSERTIVE HEIGHTS weren't far away but lacked the dash needed to get into the placings.

RACE 2 WESTSPEED 3YO HANDICAP - 1000m - 3 YEAR OLD

Comment:

A hard race to assess as it appears the 2 favorites may have had excuses. NINE TENORS led comfortably but gave it up quickly in the straight and is reported to have pulled up shinsore whilst COMMAND CENTRE although wide in the run was gone a long way out. Dan Morton is under going some tests to find if there is an issue with the Choisir gelding.

DEMIMONDE was a good winner and cannot take anything away from the performance, she is only a small filly but has performed well. She may have her work cut out once the weights start increasing.

BACKGROUND was given every chance by Troy Turner and was sound finishing 2nd whilst IDENTITY FRAUD improved on its debut to ran fairly in 3rd.

DIVINE HERO is an impressive looking son of Flying Pegasus and a horse who may appreciate further ground, it has struggled to get into its 2 runs over 1000m but has hit the line well.

PUBLIC PERCEPTION only battled and looks a shadow from the horse who won at Ascot, hasn't come on at all since the first prep.

Comment:
A slowly run 1400m event with RINGMEISTER virtually handed the event coasting along in the lead and strolling to victory. Unusually for such a strong betting stable this horse drifted alarmingly ($3.60 to $7) but was impressive in victory despite getting all the favours. It may have overcome whatever issues it had in a disappointing last campaign.

GALOUBAY, THE CORPORATION and MONEGHETTI all battled away fairly but the tempo didn't really suit there style of racing.

SEE A VICTORY, KEY BISCUIT and OSCAR WILDY never looked likely whilst CALLER ONE who has been a grand campaigner for Neville Parnham has been reitred after finishing last.

Comment:
It looked an easy assignment for WERD and that turned out to be the case with this 7yo son of Hussonet jumping quickly and never giving his rivals a look in increasing the margin all the way to the line. His trainer Chris Gangemi commented he is improving with age and that run certainly franked those remarks. He should prove competitive over this sort of distance against the best the state has to offer especially when drawing a good barrier.

VIZARD was suited by the small field and was the only other runner to perform creditably.

SPITFIRE ACE and MEGEM'S BOY only battled whilst CLASSY NUGGET is hopelessly out of form and ran accordingly.

BIKE AAROMBA expired after suffering a bleeding attack which was saddening to see, he had been a cheap purchase and a very good performer for his connections.

Comment:
After some small fields the action began to hot up and clearly the win of the day handed in here by an emerging star in MASCHINO. The acceleration of this hulking 4yo son of Encosta De Lago is a trait only the topliner's have and no doubt he is destined to race in much stronger company. Hopefully connections can fix up the tardy starts as it appears the only chink in his armour at this stage.

A really good return to the track by KNIGHT FURY who battled on strongly after doing work from his awkward gate and looks set for a nice campaign.

A good effort from PRINCE TED who was aided by drawing a much better barrier.

CHESTER ROAD, HI KILMORE and WESTRIVER KEVYDONN were beaten around 3 lengths but had no excuses.

The rest weren't up with the programme although HOLLISTER raced wide and TIMES ARE CHANGING pulled up lame so some excuses there.

RACE 6 TOOL TIME HANDICAP - 1200m - 74+ 3UP

Comment:
Nearly as impressive as the previous winner was LIKE AN EAGLE who was strongly commissioned in the bookies ring, backed as unbeatable it lived up to that support with a very easy win. William Pike once again rode it to perfection and when asked for an effort it took control quickly to win eased down on the line.

OUR LARRIKIN, WILD CHARGER and SECRET ENIGMA all got to the line well and can't fault there form out of the race. WILD CHARGER had a bit of a struggle getting through the field and could have finished a touch closer but was unlikely to challenge the winner.

GUM NUT GURU ran an honest race but is probably better suited over a touch further.

I'M HERE TO WIN has been disappointing at both runs this preparation and should be treated with caution going forward.

No excuses for the other beaten runners.

Comment :
An impressive win by the lightly raced and weighted 5yo gelding McTango who kicked through to lead and go all the way completing a riding treble for Kyra Yuill. This horse is showing terrific promise as a stayer and looks one to follow in similar races.

OFFER ME JEWELS rattled home strongly from back in the field to get 2nd in a very good display. Conceeding 5.5kg to the winner and a big margin half way up the straight it was clearly doing the best of anything in the race late in proceedings.

ONE COOL QUEEN has struggled to win races but once again got home nicely. She probably needs everything to go right for that elusive win but her recent form warrants respect in similar type events.

The others were coming in at intervals with minor excuses to DEFY ME, AMHERST, CARA CARABINI and WIZAWAY who pulled up with an elevated heart rate but all honours to the winner.

Comment:
GREAT'N'GREY had put the writing on the wall in two runs back for new trainer Stephen Miller and got the deserved win here with Michael Grantham doing a superb job to get the flashy grey into a nice spot from its awkward draw and punching it out strongly in the straight.

SINGLE WARRIOR continued its good form finishing strongly along with MICKEY DRIPPIN who caught the eye in 4th.

GENERAL ALBERT continues to race well for a veteran and was at surprisingly big odds for its consistent recent form.

THE OTHER HARV had trouble getting clear and finished off well enough but probably better suited against her own sex.

SOUND BARRIER got a mile out of its ground and was then forced wide up the straight. Expect to see it in the finish next start with a bit more luck.

KIM COIN was disappointing given its recent good form whilst SEARING HEIGHTS having its first WA start sat up in the breeze but faded late in the race in a poor effort given its good trial performances.

Monday Review 20.08

THE MONDAY REVIEW with Aaron Delaporte

A good of racing at Belmont run in blustery and overcast conditions which suited horses who could race with cover, horses sitting wide or in the breeze found it a bit tougher than normal.

The highlight of the day was the 4th time win of Idyllic Prince in the Goodwood but there was also a lot to like about prospective Victoria Carnival contenders in Bliss Street and Playing God.

Comment:
Michael Grantham showed just how much talent he has in the saddle with a 10/10 ride aboard COHORT. He had been promising to break through with a win and everything panned out perfectly in a race that suited.

RISKTAKER was a very good effort in 2nd place and again another good ride by Campbell McCallum. The Orientate mare was having her first try at a staying trip and the decision to ride her with a trailcertainly helped to get the distance.

The rest of the field only battled and OCEAN CRACKER goes for a well deserved spell after an excellent campaign.

RACE 2 - SUNDAY JAZZ @ BELMONT PARK 18/9 HANDICAP - 1600m - 74+ 3UP

Comment:

AMELIA'S DANCER was back at 1650m and the drop in distance plus being ridden off the speed did the trick for the Danzero gelding who was suited by the strong tempo set by CHIN CHIN who later faded out to run last.

Given the circumstances of the race the effort by TRUSTEE BROWN who chased up the leader and was in the breeze for most of the race was very good. He was always going to hit the front a long way from home and left a sitting shot for something with a good finish to run him down in the late stages.

MA SHANG looks to a horse to follow given the improved effort with the blinkers on. Paul Harvey pulled him out at the top of the straight and he ran home quite strongly into 3rd place.

XAARPHONIC managed to get away with the field for the first time this preparation and ran a good race at big odds. It could be worth watching over a bit further trip.

The maiden STAR BEAU had minor excuses and could pick up a race in weaker company shortly.

No excuses for the other beaten runners.

The Flying Spur filly BLISS STREET returned to the track carrying 58kg and got there by a small margin over the heavily supported YOU SAY SO who was only ridden hand and heels by Peter Knuckey but was given every chance.

BLISS STREET's class shone through and although she was given all the favours by William Pike getting a pie run up along the fence. No doubt there is some improvement to come on that effort and she will only be further suited as she gets over more ground.

The rest of the field finished in a clump with the exception of VALLEY GIRL who would have disappointed connections.

Comment:
The 1000m sprint once again produced an upset result and this time it was Jason Brown who caught rivals off guard by jumping smartly aboard FREETIME and getting that galloper to run strongly all the way to the line. This Danetime mare can be hard to catch as she often mixes form and can do plenty wrong in the run at times but when her mind is there she has the ability to match most rivals at this trip.

JAY JAY MAKSTER ran a creditable 2nd but was given every chance by Ben Kennedy.

PRINCESS GRANDERA and TOTTENHAM HOTS were the eye catchers running home strongly together in the middle of the track. Both had super closing sectionals.

The favorite CELEBRATION GIRL couldn't lead but still had every chance in the run but struggled to finish off.

Comment:
BONTIARA keep her unbeaten run intact by comfortably defeating rivals in a clinical riding display by Shaun O'Donnell. This nicely bred mare by Viscount out of the blacktype winner Kentiara looks to have a good future wherever connections decided to go with her.

KIM CLASSIC had the shades on and put in an improved effort getting a nice run through on the fence. She looks ready to win now.

CONAKEY is a hard horse to catch but finished off well, whilst SIMPLYIRRESTIBLE also got home strongly and looks on the verge of a win if she can find the right race with the tempo to suit her finishing run.

YAMUNOTRI failed to get the 1300m and connections have indicated they will drop back in trip which looks a smart move.

RACE 6 IRISH DAY @ BELMONT PARK 24/9 HANDICAP - 1300m - 74+ 3UP

Comment:
In what looked an evenly matched field TEN ACES never gave his rivals a look in making it a double for Michael Grantham and Jimmy Taylor. This horse had gone close in recent starts and sprinted away from rivals early in the straight and held a good margin all the way to the line. The time of the race was the quickest of all 4 1300m events run on the day and TEN ACES was the only leader on the day to face the stiff back straight head wind and go on with the job making the win one of note.

Some other really good efforts handed in and could not knock the efforts of all the horses running 2nd to 8th. PHILBY and BRIDGESTONE in particular where very good efforts coming back from spells, they will only improve in the runs to come.

BLACK FELIX was disappointing and connections must be scratching there heads over his efforts this time in.

MANTANGO never got into the race sitting 3 wide and consequently dropped out. He goes for a spell after a top campaign for Brett Pope.

RACE 7 GOODWOOD SPRINT - 1300m - WEIGHT FOR AGE 3UP

Comment :
IDYLLIC PRINCE got due recognition for his deeds on the track in WA by notching a 4th successive Goodwood Sprint and passing $1 million in prizemoney at the same time. This WFA veteran looked the horse to beat once Jason Brown got him outside the leader and the pace wasn't overly strong. His win made it a treble for Jimmy Taylor, all 3 being sired by Scenic. It was also a double in the saddle for Jason Brown.

PLAYING GOD was a huge effort getting into 2nd place. He had trialled poorly on the Monday and similar to that occasion appeared to be very much on his toes pre-race. Perhaps it was just his freshness coming out but he rattled off a superb last 600m and looks spot on for a big tilt at the Melbourne riches over the Spring.

Like his first up run GONDORFF once again caught the eye making late ground and he looks set for a big campaign in Kalgoorlie which seems to be the way connections are headed.

ALL FRIARED UP was caught wide and pulled up with Cardiac Arrhythmia so just rule a line through that effort. She now goes for a spell.

The last is always a touugh race but punters where on the money backing TRICKY SYD into favoritism and he didn;t let them down winning for the 2nd successive week. He was the 3rd horse on the day to win from barrier 1 and like the previous 2 sat just off the speed and gained the split when it mattered and proved too good.

GREY'N'GREY caught the eye last start and followed it up with another good run just failing to catch the winner. The Verglas gelding has his hoof on the till and should be cracking a win shortly.

NEDIYMS RULER probably isn't a horse suited to leading and to battle on and hold 3rd was a good effort.

RICH KEN was another who put in an improved run 2nd up and can be followed especially in something a bit easier.

IRISH ACTION, HEART PLAY and HENRY THE PHAROAH all had tough runs and can be forgiven to some extent.

THE WIDDER was the disappointment of the race and will have to be re-assessed after his next run as he never looked likely at any stage.

Monday Review August 6th

THE MONDAY REVIEW with Aaron Delaporte

The opening meeting for what will hopefully be another good season of racing.

The rail was back to the true for the first time in over a month but the track played superbly.

Some punters and commentators have noted the day favored leaders and onpace runners however purely on results and sectional times this meeting was no different than any other and played evenly across the board.

RACE 1 WESTSPEED 3YO HANDICAP - 1000m - 3 YEAR OLD

Comment:
An excellent win to COMMAND CENTRE who was forced to sit 3 wide in running but was still good enough to win the race. This son of Choisir came into the race with 2 trial wins and looks to have nice ability and should be winning more races on that run.

Heavily supported favorite THE WEAPON had a good run and was tracking the winning in the straight but could not close the margin.

BACKGROUND showed good speed to get across and lead the field and put in a good effort to hold on for 3rd.

HARRY HORSE who had been caught wide in 2 previous starts settled a clear last and got home well but was giving the first 3 too big a start. When it draws a barrier it might be a horse to look at backing.

The remaining gallopers had there chances but simply weren't good enough on the day.

William Pike started his Metro riders title defense in superb fashion with in my opinion the ride of the day. Settling the favorite OCEAN CRACKER in the perfect trailing position, he pushed the Ihtiram gelding through a very narrow gap and it was able to safely hold the challengers in the run to the line. This galloper is now building up a very impressive record at 2000m.

COHORT showed he still has the ability to win Saturday races with a very good effort making late ground with GREATWALL OF CHINA who has started to find some better form in recent starts.

AMHERST put in a solid effort to be just bloused out of a placing. GREY MONARCH didn't see out the 2000m and will be better suited back at a mile.

BURIN has been up for 8 starts now and might be coming to the end of his preparation as his run was below expectations.

Only a small field of 7 runners, most of whom had been struggling for form but it was good to see KENS DOUBLE return to the winners stall. The decision to send this Kendel Star gelding to Brett Lewis has worked wonders and no doubt the horse is appreciating the rural environment. However this race wasn't very strong so don;t get too excited by the victory when it next races.

SECRET ENIGMA's last win was November 2008 and went within a short head of victory. It continues to race well but is perhaps a better reflection on the other runners in the race.

MANAHARA who started favorite never looked to be travelling in the run but plugged on for 3rd.

YSMAEL had to do some work getting across to sit outside the leader and battled away in the stright to finish 4th. This horse is yet to place in 5 race starts but will easily win a maiden whenever connections decide to go that way.

The other runners really did struggle and must have disappointed connections.

An interesting race which even with the late scratching contained plenty of early speed. However as often can be the case several riders decided it would be wise not to burn early for the lead which let CELEBRATION GIRL cross from an outside gate and control the race. This Stratum mare is an honst galloper and very good over 1000m especially when allowed to get the lead like today.

IMA CITINPRETTY was the only other horse prepared to push early and be onpace and no suprise she finished 2nd.

The lack of genuine tempo made it hard for other runners to get into the race but MCSCAR was certainly the best of them. This McFlirt gelding was posted wide for all of the race but still out sprinted them in the run to the line to record the quickest last 600m sectional of the day.

Race favorite JAY JAY MAKSTER was given an impossible task from its position but hit the line well. A lot of the other runners got bumped, inconvienced or held up and simply had no chance to get into the race so don;t read too much into there beaten performances just yet.

A good win here to LATORIA who was aided by a good draw and the fact her main rival TIMELY QUEEN didn't assume the lead and had a tough run in the breeze. However it was a very good win and confirms her as one of the better Mares going around at the moment.

ELLE CHOISIT made a big sweeping run from off the pace and continued her good form holding down 2nd. ROCK MOVES led and was given every chance but just found the opposition too strong.

TIMELY QUEEN although running 5th battled it out quite well and she really needed to find the lead to be a serious winning chance. The 59kg may have also told in the finish.

Both SIMPYIRRESTIBLE and WHISTLEDOWNTHEWIND ran home nicely from back in the field and could be worth following in something weaker.

FESTIVAL STAR was caught wide for a period of the race and battled on ok.

Troy Turner has combined with TRUSTEE BROWN for his 3rd run in 3 weeks which has yielded a 2nd and two wins. He really is in a purple patch of form. This completed back to back wins for the sire Oratorio and was aided by his inside draw and the perfect split in the straight after looking like he was going to be held up between the 500m and the 300m.

KINCAPLE was a top effort after sitting wide in the run and just failing to catch the winner. An easier run in transit and it probably wins the race and is a horse better suited over further ground so is surely one to keep following.

TALK TO THE WALL got a great run through the field to fly into 3rd spot indicating it is holding form.

FLASH GIFT put in a good effort to claim 4th and could bob up shortly in the right race.

MANTANGO who has had a top preparation just failed to see out the 1600m.

Comment :
A brilliant effort by Paul Harvey aboard KID CHOISIR who rocketed home in the late stages to score. This galloper had been in good form and no surprise to see it get home.

SHOCK VALUE finished 2nd and was given the perfect run by Jason Brown.

ALL FRIARED UP ran another top race backing up from the Beaufine Stakes getting home strongly down the middle of the track. The weight increase from the last run probably just made the difference.

BLACKSMITH battled away well but had its chance if good enough. NEW IMAGE was given a gun run by William Pike but couldn't finish off strongly as anticipated. She was backing up after an impressive win in Slow conditions so whether than effort had any impact it will be hard to know as she is now headed for a spell.

Really liked the effort of KASABIAN who took a few bumps/checks in running, sat wide in the run but was still battling on strongly at the end to be beaten only 2 lengths. Certainly a horse to be watching as it gets over a further trip.

GONDORFF also caught the eye making late ground and the 1200m is way too short for it. By the looks of that effort it could be in for a good Kalgoorlie round.

A very tough effort by NUMEROUS SECRETS to hold off MONEGHETTI who had every chance to beat it after getting a gun run on the rail. Trainer Brendon Fitzgerald has indicated that the 6yo son of Numerous Times will now step to 1600m and the way it fought out the race it gives every indication it can perform well again.

In a clever move by Michael Grantham GREAT'N'GREY was sent up to challenge the leaders rounding the turn and fought its race out well to get 3rd. That was its first placing in 4 attempts first up from a spell so expect it may have some further improvement.

REVY JAY who is normally an on pace runner was dropped backed from a wide gate but charged to the line in the worn section of the track. It can mix form but on that effort should go close to a win shortly.

BIG ATTITUDE had to angle for a run inthe straight but was fairly disappointing.

A good effort was also handed in by GENERAL ALBERT running home well from way back in the field and after a good 3rd last start looks to be in its best form for a long time.
