THE MONDAY REVIEW with Aaron Delaporte
Despite not having a feature race on the card some very good racing at Belmont. Not often you will see potentially the best horse at the meeting running in race 2 on the card and I will speak about BARAKEY later in its race report but he is one of the more exciting gallopers to come out of winter racing for a while.
The track was a Good3 and times were on the slow side again and favoring on-pace runners. Several horses raced against there normal pattern to offset this however later in the day the up front pace increased which bought other horses into the races.
RACE 1 - WESTSPEED NURSERY HANDICAP - 1200m - 2 YEAR OLD
Comment:
WATERMANS BAY took this out nicely drawing away for an impressive 2 length victory. With the blinkers added for the step to Saturday company it certainly improved on its Maiden win at Northam. The victory perhaps strengthens the form of Ave The Snip who ran a close second to it that day and backed up with an unlucky effort last Wednesday at Belmont so. However WATERMANS BAY, the nuggety son of Eternity Range looks a good type with a handy future.
MURPHY'S RED BOY was heavily supported in the betting ring but was forced to race wide the entire journey and no surprise to see it drop out over the late stages. Also pulled up with an elevated heart rate so can forgive that effort.
CHECKPOINT was a tough effort holding down 2nd after sitting outside the leader on debut, it shows enough ability to suggest it will be winning races.
KEMILEE was held up at a crucial stage of the event but only got to the line fairly in the last 100m.
MARADIEGO by Blackfriars and ENDORSED by Rock of Gibraltar both raced at the back of the field and hit the line well. They could be worth following over a bit further in the right races.

Comment:
BARAKEY completed its hat trick of wins with very little extended effort and the punters who dived in at the short odds never had a worry in the run. Despite this being the slowest of his 3 1000m victories run in just 57.80 he was only tapped up briefly at the 200m mark before being quickly eased down shortly after when he had put a clear gap on his rivals. There is no doubbt the winning margin of 2.75lengths could have been much further if Jockey Jason Brown had wanted it to be. He will now go for a spell and I'm sure will be tested to his full potential when he meets some of the better sprinters over the Summer Carnival.
GO JORJ clocked the quickest run home sectional and I'm sure connections will be looking forward to its next start without Barakey in the effort. This horse is very close to a win.
ROCK MOVES resumed without a trial and although aided by its good barrier ran a nice ran in second spot. Cannot fault its effort.
NONAME CITY raced wide for most of the effort but still finished off good into 4th .
CARBINE STREET who was a trial winner coming in used up early petrol to get on the back of Barakey but wilted badly over the late stages. The effort on face value was disappointing but perhaps could be forgiven, watch to see how it goes next start.

Comment:
This was an interesting event which seemed to be slowly run in the early stages and was eventually fought out by the leaders GUM NUT GURU and LIE IN WAIT.
LIE IN WAIT had respectable form coming in and despite winning at double figure odds the victory wasn't a surprise. The horse is a good performer but needs to get the right race to show its best and had that here.
GUM NUT GURU had everything go right for it in the lead and battled well to the line for second.
NOBLE STEED got home the best of anything in the back of the field and its effort was good.
STRIKING GURU was strongly fancied in the betting ring but failed to perform and has since pulled up sore and is going for a spell.
MIGHTY ROSSA did a fair bit wrong in the run and raced wide before dropping out, it may be due for a freshen up or a spell.
The majority of the others struggled to get into the race and didn't impress but it was the sort of race you could rule out as a form reference.

Comment:
A clever ride here by Kyra Yuill to slide forward with AVANTE and sit outside the leader in race which didn't have a lot of pace engaged. Despite the winning margin being only a head don't under estimate how good the winning effort was as it is a much better horse coming from off the pace.
KERIEGN was a very good run resuming and is a horse who normally takes a few efforts and increased distance to get to his best form, the rising 7yo could be in for a very good preparation.
GOLDY JUNIOR and CATCORP both caught the eye flashing up late down the middle of the track and liked those efforts especially if they can get into some easier events in future racing.
BASKERVILLE STREET who was second favorite in the event had every chance in the run but was disappointing over the late stages, not sure I can follow it now unless we see improvement next start.
GLEN ERIN LAD looks likely to be retired after a second successive poor run.

Similar to the Avante race it was a change in riding tactics that paved the way for CAVES ROAD to record another impressive victory. Good to see this horse adapt well to its front running role and go to the line in strong fashion. Looks to be a horse on the way to the highest level and with scope to get over a bit further ground than the 1400m too.
NEW TIME caught the eye making a long sustained run from the tail of the field, it has been running some very good races without winning and can occassionally switch off in its races so has plenty of scope for improvement. Next preparation will good just see it furnish into a much more complete galloper.
MANTANGO was perfectly ridden by young apprentice Michael Grantham and lost no admirers with a good second place showing it can run out 1400m well.
LIKE AN EAGLE was strongly supported in betting and raced outside the eventual winner but couldn't match it over the late stages. It has done a good job in its first preparation.
BELORA raced wide but still battled on well to run 6th, so cant fault the run.
JOBETH was clearly the best of the non-fancied runners and could be worth following in weaker grade.

Many times in racing the best horse doesn't take out the event and this looks to be one of those races. We saw the best of 'the Pontiff' Paul Harvey at work here aboard ELLE CHOISIT keeping the favorite FRIDAYS GIRL in a pocket during the run before going for home and holding it at the bay over the late stages.
ELLE CHOISIT had been racing well and the Blinkers obviously some extra improvement as it was a good game effort sitting 3 wide the entire event and cannot take anything away from the win.
FRIDAYS GIRL was simply the victim of circumstances and not a great deal Jason Whiting could do, punters should get a chance to recoup any losses in future starts.
SIMPLYIRRESTIBLE may have relished a change in training environment as it showed some improvement with new trainer Sussannah Hoppmann and got to the line well.
SOUTHERN COMFORT and SEE A VICTORY both had trouble getting runs over the latter stages along with SKY MAGIC who I thought did a good job in its return to the track.
Hard to find any excuses for the others in the event.

INCOHERENT made up for an unlucky run last start by taking out this event in good fashion. It was a well judged ride by Shaun O'Donnell who continues to impress in the saddle. This horse is racing well although may find it a bit tougher next start as it will have to go up in grade or weight.
Really liked the effort of KELIA who took the step to Saturday grade after 2 good Northam victories. The 4yo Dyslexia gelding fought the race out well doing a good job in second spot.
YSMAEL was the eye catcher in the event and probably should have got a bit closer after being impeded at the 300m mark. It got home in clearly the quickest last 600m of the event and although its racing pattern does dictate it needs some luck in running won't stay a maiden for much longer.
EXTRA BEAT got caught wide in the run but was still entitled to do a bit better whilst the rest of the beaten runners where only fair efforts at best.
The favorite MONEGHETTI is very much an on/off galloper. It struggled to get into this race and was very much off but no surprise to see a better effort at its next start.

Always exciting to see promising gallopers returning and we had two here in BLACK FELIX and NEW IMAGE. Had a good look at both pre-race and thought they were close to the mark but with room for improvement on whatever they did here. As it turned out they put in contrasting performances.
NEW IMAGE put in a brilliant display to take this out and was a 10/10 ride by William Pike slicing his way through the field from a rearward position. This nicely bred mare will be very hard to beat going forward and should graduate to the top level.
BLACK FELIX was ridden forward from its good gate but wilted over the late stages, perhaps the early speed was too strong with the other leader SPITFIRE ACE finishing last but would have expected a lot more from a Listed winner. Will reserve further judgement until after its next run.
The fact that the two leaders and also 4th in running LADY DOLL all dropped out makes the effort of TIMELY QUEEN who battled on strongly to hold 3rd after over-racing on the speed all that more impressive. When this Danetime mare finds a race where she can dictate in the lead I believe she will be back in the winners enclosure.
OUR OL' FELLA continues to hold its good form running home strongly along with THE CORPORATION who I thought put in a good performance for its first run back.
